In July 2023, we received a call from Max, a charming and enthusiastic gentleman from Germany. He was set to marry his Scottish fiancée, Rachel, in the UK later that year. But what made Max’s request remarkable wasn’t just his energy—it was his vision.
Max wanted to build his wedding suit around something deeply sentimental: the waistcoat his father wore when marrying his mother 30 years earlier. A gesture of gratitude, heritage, and heartfelt respect.
A Challenge in Proportion, A Victory in Craft
There was just one small detail – Max, tall and broad, was two full sizes larger than his father. Resizing the vintage waistcoat while preserving its essence was no small task.
But tailoring, after all, is about more than fit. It’s about translating memory into modern form. And with a story like Max’s, the stakes were joyfully high.
A Scottish Detail Changes Everything
As the design process evolved, Max shared more. His wedding would be held in the Scottish Highlands. Rachel came from a proud Scottish family. That’s when the idea struck:
What if we lined the suit in her family’s tartan?
That single suggestion changed the entire brief. We custom-designed her family’s tartan, hand-dyed four meters of lining, and used it in three special ways:
- As the full lining of Max’s wedding jacket
- As the back panel of the resized waistcoat
- And in seven matching pocket squares for the wedding party—a gesture of unity and symbolism
The Fitting Day Magic
When Max arrived for his final fitting, the room fell into silence.
As he slipped into his jacket and turned to face the mirror, the effect was instant. His father’s waistcoat, now reborn. His wife’s heritage, now carried close to the heart. The suit – a blend of memory, love, and unmatched craftsmanship.

He commissioned a small wardrobe of additional garments for his honeymoon and newlywed life. Elegant, understated, entirely bespoke – each piece a celebration of confidence and thoughtfulness.
Then, on the night of the wedding, we received a video.
Max, in his bespoke waistcoat, stood before his new bride, serenading her on Highland drums. The song? The Last of the Mohicans. Goosebumps.
